The house is finished… almost

Posted by Louise on Oct 18, 2008 in Being organised, Disasters, WoW

We got the furniture back from storage this week.  My biggest fear was that it wouldn’t fit into the house any more.  We have changed all the rooms around so much that they seemed full without the reintroduction of all the shit that was in storage.  Thankfully most of it got squeezed into what can be loosely described as the dining room.

I have set my self the target of sorting one box a week.  Today’s target was to sort the drawers from my old desk so I actually have room to sort boxes.  I didn’t quite get as much done as I wanted to because I couldn’t find a hole punch!  I can’t file stuff in folders without one.  Nick helpfully suggested sticking a pencil through the paper into a ball of plasticine à la Blue Peter or using the rings of the ring binder to force a hole in the paper.  I gave him a withering look and decided to stop sorting and start playing WoW instead.  Two hours later I am still waiting on the blasted patch to download.  In that time Nick has beaten me to level 50 and keeps trying to show me his pumpkin head and broomstick!

Anyway, I digress.  Back to the house.  All that needs doing now is the shelving.  I’ve received the cheque from the insurance company for this so I just have to phone Jason the carpenter and sort out a date.  We’re going to make this after pay day so he can do the airing cupboard door at the same time.  Saves two lots of labour fees :-)  Once that is done we just have to wait for MFI to deliver the bottom half of the damaged side board and we are beck to normal… well, as normal as the pair of us could ever be.

Our new living room before the flood

Posted by Louise on Apr 5, 2008 in Disasters

Things are starting to dry out now. We have a dehumidifier working for most of the time, and a huge fan moving the air around upstairs. The ceiling in our lovely newly decorated living room is still damp though. This is what the room should look like, and what it looks like now :-(

A little spring shower… in the living room!

Posted by Louise on Mar 27, 2008 in Disasters

We finished decorating our living room last Thursday and finaly got the 50″ TV all set up on Saturday. I have to say it looked brill.

Today I came down stairs to find water pouring through the living room ceiling! I have never seen so much water where there should be none. It was like a multitude of dirty little waterfalls. Of course my first thought was that something was leaking in the loft. Thankfully it wasn’t but instead it was the radiator in my room which had sprung a leak during the night, which was bad enough. After mild panic trying to find the water shut off I called the insurance helpline and then we waited for emergency help. Two hours later the plumber arrived and the loss adjuster called. Call me daft but I was expecting a speedier response.

The plumber shut off the radiator properly and the loss adjuster can’t visit until Tuesday afternoon. In the meantime we have no lights (water pouring through the living room light fitting probably means it is not a good idea to switch the electricity back on to that circuit).

While Nick mopped in the living room I started mopping the room upstairs and clearing the room. I must have soaked up liters of water out of the carpet. Next Nick started hacking the carpet to pieces. As soon as we lifted the majority of the carpet the water stopped dripping down stairs, well apart from the dripping light fitting. It didn’t stop dripping for some time.

All in all it has been a pretty crap day. I know I was supposed to be tidying up my office room in readiness for my new job and working from home but I didn’t really want to have to do it under crisis conditions.

Things are slightly drier now, though very dark. I suspect that it will take some time for the floorboards and what is under the floor boards to dry. I guess the saying is true, it never rains but it pours.
